EFT Tapping As a Natural Alternative to Treat ADHD/ADD

3 min read

This past Saturday I taught a class on the basics of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) at the local library. I spoke with a woman about the stress that had brought her to the class. She said that the stress was coming from 2 children in her house. They are not her children and one of them has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Of course, she learned the basics of EFT during the class and said that she felt much better. I suggested to her that EFT can be useful for children with ADHD. She didn’t seem interested in using it on the child. She just wanted to learn to calm herself. I thought that this was a little strange. Why not try to remove or reduce the source of the stress? AND help the child.

So I decided to write this in order to let folks know that EFT can often help people with ADHD, both children and adults.

You can learn the basics of EFT many places on the internet. After learning the basics you can apply this for many, many things that you want to improve in your life. But in this article we will focus on using it for ADHD or ADD.

  • First, apply it to the immediate symptoms that are being displayed. For example, if the person is agitated and can not sit still, do some rounds of EFT focusing on “Even though I cannot sit still right now because _________ (if they have a reason), I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
  • Of course, if it is a child you would adjust the phrasing. Instead of “I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.” You might say “I am a really cool kid.”
  • Second, look for underlying causes. Often times ADHD symptoms are caused by underlying, unresolved trauma. This is what EFT is best at resolving. If you feel that you need help in uncovering an underlying trauma please seek a qualified EFT Practitioner. There are many places to find EFT Practitioners on the internet. I am not allowed to mention them in this article. I tried but it was considered ‘promotional’, even though I would not make any money from giving you a site name that lists practitioners. EFT can be done over the phone so you do not need to choose a practitioner near you.

As always, please consult your doctor before changing/discontinuing any medication. If the individual with ADHD sees improvement by using EFT do not discontinue use of any medication without talking to your doctor.

Also, please be aware of another possible ‘natural’ approach to ADD & ADHD. It has to do with allergic reactions to substances like sugar, caffeine, wheat, pesticides, etc. that may be actually causing the problem. The book “Is This Your Child?” by Doris Rapp, MD shows impressive evidence of allergies causing ADHD and/or ADD.

It is my personal opinion that many of the children who are constantly medicated because of their ADHD/ADD could be helped by other means. I hope that this helps at least some children/parents find a better way.
