WEST HARTFORD — Jack Haley won a pair of individual titles when New Canaan captured the CIAC Boys Class L Swim Championships at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center.
New Canaan’s score of 680.5 overcame a strong showing from Darien at 606.5 and Fairfield Prep with 491.5.
Haley, a freshman, made a name for himself as swimmers returned to the pool for divisional meets for the first time since the Rams took the 2019 title.
“I was hoping my times would be good enough,” said Haley, 200-freestyle champ with a time of 1:43.11. He posted a 4:40.01 over 20 laps to tack on the 500-freestyle crown. “My teammates do a great job. We came in as a team and I’m so happy to win the title. This is a great place to swim. I got to reconnect with guys I haven’t seen since Zone swims.
New Canaan coach Kat Munson echoed that sentiment.
“I’m so happy how the boys swam as a team,” Munson said. “We won states with our depth. We qualified almost everyone, which in unheard of. We had four in every event . I take pride in the fact that the top two teams were FCIAC teams. Darien had a fantastic meet.”
Haley’s win in the 500 gave New Canaan a healthy 472.5 to 409.5 lead on Darien with four events left.
Thomas Dupont had wins in the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke to help Darien take second.
“We set a school record in the 200-medley relay,” said Dupont, a senior who recorded personal bests in his two individual victories. “I did compete at states as a freshman, but that was in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle. These were new events for me, as well as the relays. We had so much fun.”
Peter Horan from Newtown took home titles in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Both times were personal bests for the junior.
“I felt I did better in the 100 free (46.17),” Horan said. “The 100 back (50.49) was more of a struggle. I had good times at trials, so I came in hoping for the best.”
Rommin Nicholas Adl from New Canaan and New Milford’s Ian Lee swam a tight 50-freestyle with Adl touching the timing pad first for a 21.72-21.77 win. The senior duo had swum within .01 of a second in the trials.
Also placing first were Fitch Co-op’s Julian Mileski, Matt Nowak, Ben Chidley and Michael Urgo (200-freestyle relay), Xavier’s Mitchell Wollen (200 IM), Darien’s Jake Dankster, Ryan Roberts, Thomas Dupont and Max Scalise (200 medley relay), New Canaan’s John Greiner, Ben Madan, Rommin Nicholas Adl and Jack Haley (400 freestyle relay).
Andrew Bell from South Windsor with a score of 542.302 won the diving title.
The State Open is Saturday with competition scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. at the Aquatics Center.
